Richter auction... MINE! :D

YAY!  I just won an auction for Richter's Chenille!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261058080719?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649&autorefresh=true

I lost several of the Richter babies that I had and will be getting replacements next week of all except for Green Dawn.  That's the only one that I have to find out of the Richter hybrids that are known to still be available.  So close to having them all!

Tipt Propagation

I'm posting this to show the difference in how quickly or how slowly some leaves will send up babies.  Well, mostly to show how slowly some do.  lol  Tipt (Tipt (F. Richter) Single large lavender/purple tips. Standard)  As a side note, does anyone know when Tipt was introduced?

The two cups on the left are both Tipt.  They were put down on 5/4.  The one in the back still hasn't produced.  The one in the front put up mouse ears in August, I think.  The one in the lower right is Bambino.  I put the leaf down for the first time on 5/4.  It has already had the babies removed the 3rd week of September and these babies are new since then.

So, Tipt and Bambino in the upper portion of this photo.  The lower left is BonBon that is in desperate need of being separated out.  To the right of that (center and cut off on the edge) is Topps.  All of these leaves were originally put down on 5/4.

So this just shows how quick some are and how slow others are.  I've learned a lot since I originally put these down and wouldn't use such long stems anymore, if nothing more than just to conserve space.  It didn't seem to hurt any of them though!

Iris (Richter)

Iris (792) 08/05/1956 (F. Richter) Double light blue double. Quilted. Standard

All three Iris leaves have nice strong babies coming up.  I started these in sphagnum moss (not the good stuff but still moss rather than soil) and then transferred them into a moss/soil mix last week.  They're going pretty well for me, which is good since I have a few people who are looking for babies already!  I'm really excited for this one since it's yet another very rare variety.  (How is it that I've ended up with so many rare ones in such a short time?  haha)

Richter blossom photos

I wanted to have all of the info and photos that I have of Richter's plants all in one place.  This is all from Candy's blog.  Without Candy's efforts, most of these would be gone forever.  I have leaves down, or babies, of each of these but none of mine have grown large enough to bloom.

Either Candy's plant has been mislabeled, misidentified or reverted (throwback to a previous generation).  The original catalog description was as follows ""Huge baby pink fluffy double. Slightly frilled foliage.")

A note about growing Tipt. It needs to be placed at the center of your lights and maybe a little closer to the lights as well.

The following blog is mine.  Candy has received leaves of this but I don't know how they're doing at this point.  Renee is the reason that Candy sent me leaves of all the plants above.

Mouse Ears!

My Tipped Honey leaf *finally* has mouse ears!  Just the littlest bit poking through but I've been waiting for a long time on this one!  Here's what it'll look like when it grows up!

I also have leaves poking through finally on Tipt (F. Richter) Single large lavender/purple tips. Standard.  Some of those oldies are very, very slow to propagate!  Here's a photo of Tipt, courtesy of Candy's Violets, http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=5710262675713246116&postID=8303437204522936667

Richter's Iris

Woot! I have lots of leaves with babies starting but the one that I'm most excited about is Iris, another very rare Richter hybrid! I have three leaves and all three have babies! Hopefully they all grow up into nice big strong plants!

Iris (792) 08/05/1956 (F. Richter) Double light blue double. Quilted. Standard

This photo was sent to me by the woman who sent me the leaves.  I can't wait until my babies look like this!

http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa307/DebsVioletRoom/African%20Violets%20I%20Grow/Standard%20Violets/IrisPlant.jpg

Here's the story of her plant:
"I bought plants, plugs, and leaves from Drew's African Violets several times before he went out of business. I received 1 single leaf of Iris in April 2008. I have a room where I isolate and start my new leaves and plants. I had some major surgery a couple of years ago and got behind in my violet work. My "Violet Room" turned into the "Jungle Room." I thought about dumping everything in there into the trash to start fresh but just couldn't make myself do it. I am so glad I didn't! I have found several vintage and rare ones in my jungle trays. One single Iris plant was growing in what started out as a leaf pot. It was back in the back corner of a tray and I noticed it when it put up a bloom stalk. I started trying to find someone who has it or even pictures of it. I have not been able to find anybody who has it. It bloomed single the first time so I wasn't even sure it was what it was supposed to be. But lo and behold the next time it bloomed...wow."

1977 AVM's - The Redhead?

I recently received the entire year of 1977 AVM's and have been having a fun time reading through them! As fun as it's been, it's also been a little heartbreaking to see violets that are probably no longer around. Of course, I've fallen in love with one...

Does anyone know if The Redhead is still available? How about these?
Pink Granada (Granger)
Purple Spot (Lyon)
Henrietta Wilson
Celia (Maas)
Betcha
Cat's Meow
Kira (Howard Utz)
Tippy (Lyon)
Sylvan Blue
Fredette's Sugar Blues

I'd love it if anyone could point me to some the violets that I've listed but I'm afraid that many of them are no longer around.

In other news, my close-up photo of Renee is going to be in FC2 as she wasn't pictured in that program. Thanks to Ann-Marie for helping out with this. :) Bambino, Iris, Kaper, and Topps will have photos as soon as my plants are ready :)

I received this crown on April 25, 2011 as my first try at starting a crown (from a class that our club did). I removed 2 leaves from that crown to send to a woman who had been looking for Renee for years and then I left her pretty much alone.

The other night when I was brushing my teeth, I noticed that she had put a bloom stalk up and I nearly choked! lol She thought she was being pretty sneaky there! Today she opened up enough for me to take a photo and I snapped it as soon as I could!

There are 2 other blossoms on that bloom stalk that are developing but no other bloom stalks. There is, however, another baby coming up on the side. My understanding is that this girl is quick to do this as the mother plant had crowns ALL over it!

Really loving my oldie... she hurdled me into the world of vintage violets and I'm loving it!

AVM Magazines... 1977

I purchased the entire year of issues (5) of AVM from 1977 and they arrived yesterday. It's really interesting to go through them and see plants that are no longer available and hear the things that were important to them at the time. I've also discovered that I want, if at all possible!, to get The Redhead. It's a beautiful violet that should not be lost and I'm hoping that it hasn't been.

I also discovered yet another Richter violet that Candy doesn't have on her list. Jingle Bells has no information on it other than the name but it was on the 1977 Best Varieties list. I've written to her to let her know about it.
